Dog Licenses
All dogs in the Town of Enfield over four months of age must be licensed within 30 days of acquisition or moving into town. Licensing ensures our community stays safe by verifying rabies vaccinations and supports local animal control services. Failure to license could result in a ticket, a court appearance, and a fine.
License Renewal
If your dog is already licensed in Enfield, you can renew online except in the following cases:
- Expired Rabies Vaccination: You cannot renew online if your rabies certificate has expired. Please email a new veterinarian certificate to townclerk@townofenfieldny.gov or fax it to 607-277-2639 before attempting to renew.
- Over 1 Year Expired: If your license has expired for over a year, please contact the Clerk’s office via phone at 607-273-8256 or via email townclerk@townofenfieldny.gov for assistance.
New Licenses
Required Forms
To obtain a new license, you must submit a Dog License Application (PDF) along with:
- Rabies Certificate: A valid rabies certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian is required by NYS Public Health Law #2145. Otherwise, if applicable, provide a proof of rabies exemption status.
- If spayed or neutered, a Veterinarian’s Certificate is required. If you have an older dog with no records, a veterinarian can examine the animal and sign an affidavit as to whether it was spayed or neutered instead.
License Fees
Fees include a state-mandated surcharge that supports the NYS Animal Population Control Fund. The remainder of your fee stays in Enfield to fund our contract with the SPCA.
- Neutered Male or Spayed Female: $12.00
- Unaltered Male or Female: $24.00
More Information
Rabies remains an important health concern. Dog licensing requires rabies vaccinations and ensures that your dog, and your neighbors, is up-to-date and protected. Not only does this protect dogs, but your family, your neighbors, and the entire community.

What is my licensing money used for?
Any dog license fees collected by the Town is only spent on dog related services. All of your license fee stays in the Town of Enfield and helps pay for the cost of our contract with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Tompkins County, a no-kill shelter committed to protect companion animals.
The state surcharge, required by law, is sent to the New York State Animal Population Control Fund (ASPCApro) and is distributed in the form of grants to non-profit organizations to provide low cost spay/neuter programs throughout New York State (excluding New York City).
